Chicken Bone Broth Recipe (Using Pasture-Raised Bones & Feet)

Why Bone Broth is a Superfood

A properly prepared pasture raised chicken bone broth is a nutrient-dense superfood that supports joint health, boosts gut health, improves your skin and hair, strengthens your immune system, promotes rest, and more!
Once you learn how to make your own bone broth with pasture-raised chicken bones, you will never go back to weak, unflavorful, deficient store-bought broth.

Benefits of Bone Broth

👉 Supports Joint Health – Collagen and gelatin help keep your joints strong and supported, especially if you’re active or dealing with stiffness.

👉 Boosts Digestion & Gut Health – The gelatin in bone broth helps soothe your gut lining and supports better digestion.

👉 Improves Skin & Hair – Want healthier skin and stronger hair? Bone broth delivers collagen that supports elasticity and hydration.

👉 Strengthens Your Immune System – A healthy gut helps support a stronger immune system. Glycine and glutamine in bone broth help fortify your gut barrier.

👉 Promotes Restful Sleep – Glycine has been shown to support better sleep quality and help you feel more rested.

👉 Fights Inflammation – The amino acids in bone broth help calm chronic inflammation, which is at the root of many health issues.

👉 Supports Bone Strength – Bone broth contains trace minerals like calcium and magnesium that help support strong bones.

👉 Helps with Muscle Growth & Weight Management – It’s a protein-rich powerhouse that helps keep you full while supporting lean muscle.

The quality of those nutrients depends heavily on how the animal was raised. If you want to better understand how raising animals on pasture affects nutrition, read our guide on whether grassfed beef is worth it.

Why Your Chicken Source Matters:

Broth pulls its flavor and nutrition from the inputs you use. If you want the most nutritious bone broth without the toxins, it’s important to use chicken from a source you know and trust. We use bones from our regeneratively raised chicken that live outdoors on pasture instead of confinement barns.

If you use store-bought broth or broth made from conventional chicken, you will end up with broth that lacks flavor and nutrition. In fact, bones and fat are areas in the body where toxins can be stored in higher concentrations, including pesticides and chemicals.

To keep those things out of your body, you have to choose healthy inputs.

Chicken Bone Broth Recipe

Bone broth made from this recipe with our pasture-raised chicken bones will be a deep, rich, golden brown color. It will be thick like jello when it cools because of all that collagen. If you use the full bones without blanching or removing the skin, your broth will be healthier and cloudier. I prefer nutrition over clarity, so I throw all the parts in.

You can also make an incredible broth using our grassfed beef bones if you prefer a richer, darker broth.

What You Need:

  • 1 gallon of water (or enough to cover bones)
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar*
  • Carrots, onion, and celery
  • Bay leaf
  • Any other fresh herbs you enjoy (thyme, sage, rosemary)
  • 2–4 pounds of chicken bones (Backs n' Bones broth kit, chicken feet, or leftover bones)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

How to Make It:

  • Season the bones with salt and pepper. Roast in a 350° oven until cooked.
  • Place all ingredients in a large pot or slow cooker.
  • Bring to a low boil.
  • Reduce to a simmer and cook for 24 hours.
    • This is a very important step. If you cook this for a shorter amount of time, you will still create a delicious broth, but you will not extract all the nutrients from the bones.
  • Allow the broth to cool. Strain it into a large container and discard the solids.

This is what my chicken broth looks like when it has some time to cool: SO MUCH GELATIN!

Enjoy in your favorite recipe or drink it as is!

If you need bones for your next batch, you can find our chicken backs and bones broth kit here or add chicken feet for even more collagen.

Broth can be refrigerated and used within 4 days or frozen and used later.

*The vinegar helps extract nutrients from the marrow and bones.
